STAR GUEST Anne Vepsä: Dancing at the Art Museum

Jaana Partanen’s exhibition Mental Alchemy – Matrix Layer has brought to the visitors to the Kuopio Art Museum not only a breeze from the 3D world, but also a chance to participate in the artwork. Sensors that recognise a person entering the showroom and capture him or her along to the fractal world reflected on the wall. This has brought forth a phenomenon which is quite new and surprising to the staff of the Art Museum: people are seen dancing at an open spot of the showroom.

Ms. Partanen’s exhibition titillates the imagination, because its central elements consist not only of technology, but also of dimensions of the mind, dream experiences and the border state between waking and sleep. Although researchers cannot even today fully explain the ultimate ends of dreams, something has been found out.
But the exhibition makes people dance, and at times the problem is to persuade customers to leave the exhibition – as the clock nears five, we might smilingly have to ask whether the dance couldn’t be continued the next day. Come to try out and experience!
