Star guest Teresa Töntsi RIISA: Eight months – over 10,000 visitors of 30 nationalities
The objective of RIISA’s extensive renovation and the ”Stairway to Sanctity” exhibition reform, completed in 2015, was to achieve a memorable, varied, ever-changing and accessible museum environment. In addition to the main exhibition, the museum experience is complemented by changing exhibitions, multi-purpose space Mosaiikki (Mosaic) and museum shop Pikku-Bysantti (Little Byzantium). The objective was achieved: during the first eight months of opening, over 10,000 customers of 30 different nationalities visited RIISA.
Religions are a central part of people’s lives and identities all over the world. The cultural heritage and symbolism associated with them arouse interest beyond religious borders. The mission of RIISA, the Orthodox Church Museum of Finland located in Kuopio, is to transmit the millenarian Byzantine tradition and the Orthodox way of life. The museum experience is unforgettable: communal, private, sacred or archaic, yet a coherent, haunting and holistic experience. RIISA is a museum with a soul.
The church museum looks into the future, and development work has been done on the long term. RIISA’s objective is commitment to sustainable and convertible exhibition-technical solutions. They enable the placement of artworks in changing exhibitions as a part of the millenarian Eastern tradition. Customers’ wishes have been considered in the display, and the received grants have also made it possible to put on display material never seen before.
Architectural, art and design studio Partanen & Lamusuo Ltd has carried out RIISA’s visual designing.
