Star Village galaxy – the Merrasjärvi area art concept
YIT Oyj has invited our studio to join in the Tähtikylä area art design contest of the residential area to be completed in Lahti, early next year. We are pleased to participate in the contest.
It was clear already at the ideation stage that the lighting design would form a large part of the art concept of the contest. We designed many functional areas for Tähtikylä which were to serve the various groups of resident in every season. These functional areas would be lit with variable and impressive lights, with a specially designed artistic lighting. We were stimulated by star chart patterns in the placement of the functional areas. Little by little, the clusters of the area compositions began to form a particular star pattern – the Tähtikylä galaxy. We felt the contest concept strengthened nicely the architectural star theme designed for the area.
Although the first prize of the contest went to another participant this time, we were not left completely empty-handed. Making the entry woke many new thoughts of the possibilities of designing future residential areas and of how art can be integrated as a part of the designed environment.
