STAR GUEST Päivi Pitkäniitty: Evolution – from print file to glass and the wall of the Kuopio University Hospital
476 image files and approximately 1500 m2 of glass go through many machines and pairs of hands in the factory. The process starts on the image processor’s table. The image files over a metre wide and nearly three metres long are converted by digital colour separation into the colour space of our ceramic colours.
In pre-processing, the glass is cut and ground. A glass printer prints the print file to a glass sheet by spraying several colours on top of each other, which gives the desired hues. Finally, the glass is tempered, which makes the ceramic colour burn into the glass and become part of it.
The complexity of the colours and the variation of the raster and the covering surface make the project challenging and interesting. The completed end result can soon be admired on the façade of the Kuopio University Hospital.
