Modern art and licence to understand
The tenth anniversary of contemporary art museum Kiasma was celebrated a few years ago. The theme of the jubilee year was ”I don’t quite get it…”. The phrase expresses the essential of contemporary art to many. But the question is: does contemporary art need to be understood? The theme year encouraged to live and to experience, not to perform or understand. The word ’quite’ gives you the freedom to understand or not – both are quite OK. However, I have noticed in practice that you can enjoy a work of art, it creates ideas and you get more out of it, if you know something of its technique, background or the aspirations of the artist.
I challenge you to try out: artist Jaana Partanen presents her Mental Alchemy exhibition, worked out with the 3D technique, on 22nd February, 2013, at 5 to 6 p.m., at the Northern Photographic Centre, Oulu (Hallituskatu 7, Cultural Centre Valve). Welcome!
